Abstract

The primary goal is to discern the key factors influencing regional outcomes in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for the years 2015, 2018, and 2022 at the national level. To this end, the topic was initially framed, and existing literature on both national and international levels was reviewed. Data from the PISA for the years 2015, 2018, and 2022 was obtained from the official OECD website, Portuguese data were filtered, cleaned, and prepared. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis of the main variables was conducted, and linear regression models were applied to the sample. It can be concluded that most regions, on their own, were not statistically significant in the results due to the inclusion of other control variables. The student's socio-economic and cultural status proved to be the main factor positively influencing the results, i.e. students with greater economic means usually scored better on the questionnaire. In addition, students who have repeated the school year, missed at least one class in the last two weeks prior to taking the questionnaire, attend a private school with public funding or a public school tend to achieve lower results in the questionnaire compared to the base variables. The reference variables are the students who have never repeated the year, who have not missed any classes and who attend a private school without government funding, respectively.
