Abstract

This dissertation describes a project whose main objective is the development and optimization of a transparent polymeric film that presents reversible mechanical properties, which adapts to the shape of the lesion and that contains active components. The company Tech4MED uses materials of natural origin to obtain bioactive and intelligent functionalities to use in its products. This creates a bridge between the by-products and waste generated in the forestry and marine industry with the markets associated with the textile, cosmetics, hygiene and biomedical industries. To address the identified limitations detected in existing dressing materials available in the market, the company decided to produce a prototype incorporating a polymeric film. This innovation aims to mitigate these limitations by adding natural compounds in its production process. The production process was reproduced and optimized throughout the execution of this project. Several rounds of prototyping of the films were conducted until the most promising formulations were determined, and these formulations were submitted to several tests in order to mechanically characterize the films, as well as to evaluate their cytotoxicity. The results obtained allowed us to realize that although some properties of the membranes were within the expected, others were successfully optimized to achieve the goal of the project. This internship resulted in a work with promising results and that can continue to be explored and optimised by Tech4MED, before presenting this product to the biomedical and medical textile industry and to the market.
