Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused mainly by non physiologic contact between gastric and duodenal content and esophageal, pharyngeal and oral mucosa. This way, among all the extra-esophageal complications many affect oral cavity. However, they only occur if other factors are present on an active role. Time is essential for both morphological and functional complications but only if non-physiological contact already mentioned is prolonged and continuous, exceeding tissue resistance. There are other factors such as stress, poor oral hygiene and conditions that cause weakening of the epithelium such as eosinophilic or Candida esophagitis, impairment of inflammatory and immune defense capabilities; they all work synergistically with acid regurgitation. This drive us directly to the role of the dentist and medical doctor on the diagnosis and treatment of dental and oral rehabilitation. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to focus primarily on oral cavity lesions caused by GERD, as well as about the oral signs and symptoms of this disease. METHODS: We performed a bibliographic research of all publications on the subject with the search motor PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/), using as key words the following MeSH terms: “Gastro esophageal reflux disease”, “physiopathology”, “oral complications”, “acid regurgitation” and “oral health” along with Boolean operator AND. In relation to these inclusion criteria were based on articles published in English, making a time restriction from 2000 to the present. CONCLUSION: Many are the characteristic extra esophageal GERD syndromes, and one that attacks the oral cavity is composed by dental erosion lesions, often resulting assembly in acid action with other factors, less frequent oral lesions, halitosis, dysphasia and several salivary changes. The dentist or doctor must know this condition as well as all dental and oral changes so as to diagnose, manage and properly rehabilitate the occlusal and dental balance and oral health.
