Abstract

This research was developed in St. Joseph Home Health Care, in Areias de Vilar, which belongs to the county of Barcelos and it’s in the district of Braga. The main aim of this investigation was to study the development of the mental disease as well as the fact that the people who suffer from this illness ask for money to people they see in the streets. Throughout time madness had different approaches. Until the 18th century mental disease was associated to supernatural ideas, strengths and reasons of mystical nature. With the emergence of Enlightenment and the ideas that came out of the French revolution, the humanization of madness started all over the world. Thus, health care homes to support and take care of patients as well as medical staff improved. In Portugal the clinical progresses in mental disease emerged especially in the 19th century and in the second half of the 20th century. These centuries determined the appearance of psychiatric hospitals in our country and the establishment of mental diseases laws. Psychiatric diseases have been the target of several changes, which have helped to improve the well-being of the mental patient.
