As a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, the chronic pain involves changes in personal and professional activities and impinges on their familial relations. The objective of this empirical study is to assess the extent to which pain conditions and marital relationships are associated and are predictors of psychological morbidity in patients with chronic pain. 200 subjects diagnosed with chronic pain, participated in this study followed by the Pain Unit, Hospital of Braga. The results demonstrate that the higher the intensity of disability and pain levels are greater psychological morbidity presented by subjects. Similarly, it was found that a minor relationship adjustment is associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety. Regression analyzes verifying that the depressive symptoms are best explained by dyadic cohesion than by pain conditions, which is not true for anxiety. The results thus demonstrate the existence of an association between assignable dimensions of marital adjustment and psychological morbidity in chronic pain, suggesting the relevance of these aspects are considered in clinical practic
