Abstract

Dropout is a common phenomenon in clinical practice in adolescents, and it can be defined as the premature end of the therapeutic process, by the client, without achieving the goals previously stipulated for the therapy. This study aims to explore the role of sociodemographic variables of adolescents and family, clinical variables and variables of the therapeutic process in dropout, in a sample of 294 adolescents, aged between 11 and 17 years, attended at a university psychology clinic. To carry out the study, the instruments Request Psychology Services of Minors, ASEBA Battery and Information on Therapeutic Process provided by the Therapists were used. The results indicate a statistically significant association between process status and sociodemographic variables, family typology, parental marital status, and significant differences at the SES level. As for the clinical variables, only significant results were found for the variable type of problems. Significant differences were also found in the variables of the therapeutic process, number of sessions and duration of the process, depending on the state of the process. This study contributed to the knowledge regarding dropout and related variables, which can allow psychologists to better adjust psychological interventions to the needs of adolescents, preventing dropout.
