Abstract

The present study aimed to develop the preliminary version of a questionnaire to assess the experience of providing formal care to the elderly, considering both positive and negative valences. The ECF_i development process was carried out over three phases: 1) literature review, 2) item generation and 3) spoken reflection. The first phase, focused on the literature review, allowed for a deeper study of the construct – caregiving experience –, of the aspects that contribute to a more negative or more positive experience, and of the main problems presented by the elderly. A review of the assessment instruments of the informal caregiving experience was also conducted. In the second phase – item generation – a conceptual matrix was developed which crosses the identified dimensions and the positive and negative valences of the caregiving experience. Finally, in the third phase, a spoken reflection was conducted with eight formal caregivers of older people, from which resulted the draft version of the ECF_i, with a total of 42 items. In future studies, the psychometric properties of the preliminary version of the ECF_i should be assessed. This questionnaire will subsequently contribute to the professional practice of psychologists in identifying difficulties and satisfaction generating aspects in formal caregivers and in designing interventions adapted to these caregivers' needs.
