Abstract

This dissertation presents a comprehensive study on the internationalisation process, focusing on Portuguese companies and the role of Economic Diplomacy in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). By exploring the experiences of Portuguese companies and their engagement in the Middle East market, this research contributes to the existing literature on internationalisation processes, Economic Diplomacy, and the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the Middle East. By employing the Focus Group research method, in-depth insights were gathered from key stakeholders, including top company executives, to provide a nuanced understanding of the internationalisation process. Internationalisation is a vital strategy for companies seeking growth and expansion in foreign markets. The Middle East, with its rapidly developing economies and diverse business opportunities, has become an attractive destination for companies looking to expand internationally. However, entering the Middle East market poses specific challenges. Effective Economic Diplomacy plays a crucial role in providing companies with the necessary support, resources, and market intelligence to overcome these challenges. The Gulf Cooperation Council countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, are integral players in the Middle East. Understanding the dynamics within the GCC is essential for Portuguese companies seeking successful internationalisation in the Middle East. Through focus group discussions with Portuguese companies operating in the Middle East and key stakeholders in the region, this research aims to identify common patterns, best practices, and areas for improvement in the internationalisation process. The insights gained from this study provide valuable guidance to Portuguese companies, policymakers, and economic diplomats involved in promoting and facilitating international trade and investment. Overall, this dissertation sheds light on the internationalisation process, Economic Diplomacy, and the Middle East market, offering practical recommendations for collaboration and support to enhance the internationalisation efforts of Portuguese companies in the dynamic and complex Middle East region.
