Abstract

Health Promotion is a strategy for the betterment of the population‟s quality of life. Health Education is an essential action geared towards Health Promotion and has a fundamental role in enabling individuals to acquire healthy habits and consequently, obtain health gains. The possibility of transformations occurring in the community with regards to life and health conditions depends on the access to determined forms of knowledge, having Health Education a significant role with respect to increasing life and health conditions of the population. This clinical practice report focuses on Health Education at the three levels of prevention. The first part refers to the clinical practice occurring at the Alvalade health center and is composed of two moments: health diagnosis in the community and community intervention in gypsy residents of the Murtas neighborhood. The health diagnosis was not simply a characterization of the Alvalade health center and of the dynamics of nursing care, but a descriptive, exploratory, transversal study geared towards mothers of gypsy ethnicity with children between the ages of 0 to 11 years, enrolled in this health center. Due to this diagnosis, the following emerged as priority necessities in Health Education: illnesses detected in the foot test, disease prevented by vaccination and, healthy eating habits for children between 0 to 11 years. In the advanced nursing intervention in the community, and at the same time trying to respond to the evaluated necessities, Health Education sessions were held and pamphlets with simple vocabulary (avoiding technical language), and with easy and comprehensive information, were elaborated. Part II refers to the development of clinical practice in the orthopedic external consultation, at the Hospital Curry Cabral, and contemplates an advanced nursing intervention in Health Education in the pre-operatory period for a group of patients in the waiting list for a total hip arthroplasty. The project counted with the participation of a reference element for each step of the process, from the time surgery was proposed, going through the pre, intra and post-operatory period until the period of education with regards to discharge namely, adapting to daily life activities. This report translates professional growth and maturation, as well as, the progressive gain of competencies, namely in the domain of research, communication, relation, negotiation, management/ organization of Education and Information in the area of advanced nursing intervention in the community.
