Abstract

The final report presented in this work refers to the completion of the Master’s degree in Religious Sciences at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Portugal. The proposal follows the postgraduate programme and the Supervised Teaching Practice. Presenting a vast reflection that intertwines various ideas and authors from philosophy, educational science, theology, among others, the referential concept of freedom in the final report follows the thought of Saint Augustine. Based on the ideas of free will, doing good, responsibility, and happiness, the research investigates how the teaching of Catholic Moral and Religious Education (CMRE) can help students in the perception and experience of freedom. In other words, it aims to understand what students perceive as freedom and whether the choice to attend CMRE is voluntary or conditioned. To seek a plausible answer to the main objective of the work, the report utilised surveys and observations, which will be analysed and commented on to argue the relevance of the theme within the CMRE content, especially as a suggestion to motivate students to improve social participation inside and outside the classroom.
