Substance abuse and treatment in Therapeutic Communities (TC) continues to be a very relevant topic today. This study aimed to explore the effect on preparation for treatment of CT on psychopathology and consumption, in addition to adapting the Circumstances, Motivation and Readiness Scales (CMR), De Leon and collaborators (1994), to the Portuguese context. This is a quantitative, descriptivecorrelational study, with 208 individuals, between 15 and 68 years old (M = 44.23, SD = 11.77), mostly male (79.3%). The instruments applied were a sociodemographic questionnaire, the CMR scale, the Anxiety, Depression and Stress scale (EADS21) and SOCRATES 8D. The results showed that the Portuguese version of the CMR needs some adjustments, despite having presented satisfactory results. There were positive relationships between CMR and SOCRATES 8D, as well as between the dimensions of circumstances and motivation with levels of anxiety, depression and stress. However, no significant differences were found in relation to primary substances and sociodemographic variables. These results contributed to the validation and adaptation of the CMR instrument for the Brazilian population, in addition to providing a deeper understanding of treatment preparation, psychopathology and substance use. For future studies, it would be relevant to include more diverse methodologies, to better explore the dimensions, the validity of the instrument in different contexts and ethnic groups, as well as the impact of psychosocial factors on motivation for change.
