Abstract
Introduction: The elimination of microorganisms and the hermetic sealing of the root canal system (RCS) are essential for the success of endodontic treatment (ET). Enterococcus faecalis is frequently associated with ET failures. Bioceramic endodontic sealers have stood out due to their biocompatibility, ability to stimulate tissue regeneration, and dimensional stability. Additionally, with their antimicrobial properties, they can act as an effective adjunct in preventing ET failures and improving clinical prognosis. Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of bioceramic root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis, synthesizing data from several studies to determine their ability to eliminate or inhibit the growth of this bacterium. Materials and Methods: The search was conducted in the Medline/PubMed and Web ofScience databases, using specific terms related to the antimicrobial activity of bioceramic root canal sealers against Enterococcus faecalis. The relevant studies, which met the established inclusion and exclusion criteria, were selected by two independent investigators. Results: Several studies demonstrated the efficacy of bioceramic endodontic sealers in eliminating Enterococcus faecalis. However, the lack of standardization in the selection of sealers and in the methods of application and culture hindered direct comparison between studies. Nonetheless, it was evidenced that these sealers exhibit significant antimicrobial activity, contributing to the reduction of ET failures. Conclusion: Bioceramic root canal sealers have proven effective against Enterococcus faecalis, despite variations in study methods. Future investigations should focus on standardizing research methods to improve comparability and clinical applicability of the results.
