Abstract

The following report on my Master’s Degree in Nursing, specializing in Medical- Surgical Nursing, reflects my learning experience during each of the internship periods integrated in the study plan.The Course is comprised of 3 internship modules – Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit and Optional, with 180 hours each. I have received credit for Module III – Optional, as a result of the skills acquired in the field of Perioperative Nursing, as well as for the work performed in the Operating Room.Module I of my internship took place at Hospital Pedro Hispano’s Emergency Room.Module II was spent at Hospital da Prelada’s Burn Unit/Special Care Unit.This report emphasizes the work developed during both internship periods, reflecting onthe goals that were set for each one, while clarifying the activities developed towardsthe achievement of these goals, reporting difficult situations that I came across and thestrategies followed to overcome them.The clinical internship is an excellent opportunity to complement and apply theknowledge acquired in theoretical-practical classes, as well as to develop new skills as aClinical Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing.During these training periods, my decision-making capability was improved, allowing me to become more self-sufficient in the future as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.The skills acquired led me to provide a better service, and to reflect upon my ethical,social and professional responsibilities.During the internship module spent at the Emergency Room, my knowledge/skills in thefield of critically ill patients, trauma patients, advanced life support, insertion ofPacemakers and chest pain were greatly improved.The internship spent at the Burn Unit/Special Care Unit was fascinating, allowing me toacquire skills in the field of burn patients, ventilated patients, change of dressings inburn patients, as well as the realization of their immense suffering.This report starts by presenting a brief description of the work that was carried out andthe goals that were set, while reflecting upon the activities and skills that I was able todevelop.
