Abstract

The realization of this report fits into the study plan of the Masters Course in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing of the academic year 2009/2011 of the Institute of Health Sciences of Portuguese Catholic University, being the main purpose to underline the competences developed. The experiences described relate to the internships performed in the Infection Control Commission of the Local Health Unit of Matosinhos and the internship performed in the Emergency Service of the Medium Ave Hospital Center - Famalicão Unit, for the period time between April 19, 2009 and November 27, 2010, in a total of 500 hours. To fulfill his purpose, this report seeks to be a logbook that shows the student as author of his own formation. The clinical training was an important period to consolidate the theoretical apprenticeship and reinforce the matrix of knowledge.Although accustomed to critical patient care, given my experience in intensive care, through clinical training in module – I, I had my first contact with the reality of an Emergency Service. In the process, I could not remain indifferent to the overload and unpredictability of work that professionals face in day-to-day. In this context, the cases of stress and uncertainty before the patient in critical condition reveal a diversity of necessities on the part of the patient and family, being expected from nurses the capacity to handle crucial situations with velocity and precision, demanding itself increased competencies in the integration of information and establishment of priorities, while also, to promote the help relationship, the nurse has to be capable of listening and talking, transmitting information and sharing emotions. In the optional module, the choice fell on the Infection Control Commission, due to the recognition that the care associated infections constitute a health problem world-wide, being one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality, associated with clinical procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic provided to patients. The realization of this internship was essential for the development and integration of professional competencies inherent to the specialized nursing that contribute to the safety of the patients.
