Abstract
This dissertation proposes an analysis of labour relations in the context of the modelling profession, with a special focus on issues of discrimination in the fashion sector. Throughout the dissertation, the legal implications of the professional activity of a model will be considered, establishing a parallel with the labour scope of the professional activity of a sportsperson, and addressing its particularities from the perspective of the Statute for Professionals in the Field of Culture. In addition, the dissertation aims to problematise issues related to the principle of equality and non-discrimination, with an emphasis on discriminatory practices based on physical appearance that tend to occur in the world of fashion, and on the concept of positive discrimination. A reflection will be made on the phenomenon of hiring atypical models, questioning the extent to which such practices can constitute an expression of inclusion or consist of merely commercial strategies that a brand decides to adopt. We can therefore conclude that combating discrimination in the fashion sector requires a legal approach that is sensitive and attentive to diversity, considering the psychological and social impacts associated with the imposition of rigid and often unattainable aesthetic standards.| Date of Award | 13 Jan 2025 |
