Abstract

The advanced nursing study starts nowadays very naturally. Nursing, as a science organizes itself in a system of knowledge built on scientific method and development from scientific proof that withholds the theoretic bases which are sustained. Consequence of its natural evolution, nursing builds up new knowledge, new realities, new truths which are transposed to current practice creating wide augmented range of new possibilities to provide available care, acknowledge and sustainable. The academic driver to acquire new competences requires the advanced studies of nursing, as the “Mestrado em Enfermagem Médico-Cirúrgica” from the “Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa” presents, with a specialization on the same field of research. The scope of this Masters is the patient in critical condition and aims to develop of competencies to assist the adult and elderly patient with serious diseases by using advanced nursing practices. This report will provide an analytical, critical and reflexive description of the experiences in the various internship locations during the aforementioned Master degree: Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and as a chosen option, an Emergency medical services vehicle. Each location had specific objectives and this report is the reflection of what happened to achieve their fulfilment in a critical and reflexive way. This work is composed by two different sections: the first presents the scientific evidence, based in an integrated review, which objective is to identify the medication errors related with the nursing care at the ICU; the second part presents a description, analysis and reflection of the experience that led to the development of competencies recommended to the nurse specialized in “Enfermagem Médico-Cirúrgica”. As a result of this journey, which ends with this report, I have developed the advised competences by the school and by the “Ordem dos Enfermeiros”, which together, characterize the inherent competencies of a specialist nurse in this area of a critical condition patient. Generally, the unique moments experienced allowed my professional development but, most of all, my personal growth.
