: um contributo para melhores cuidados

Abstract

This report, carried out as part of the Master's Degree in Nursing with a specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for the Critically Ill Person, from Porto Nursing School of the Catholic University of Portugal, takes a holistic approach to this specialty course, culminating in the acquisition of skills in this area. The internship contexts took place in a multipurpose intermediate care unit and an intensive care unit, between September 2, 2024 and December 18, 2024. This document has the following structure: 1) introduction; 2) a contribution to the development of competences for specialized care; 3) characterization of the contexts of practice; 4) the development of specialized competences; 5) SWOT analysis and 6) conclusion. The aim of including these chapters is to carry out a critical-reflective analysis of the experiences gained during the internship. The internships contributed to the development of skills in the provision of care to critically ill people and their families, specifically in terms of communication skills, management and provision of care to critically ill people, management of human and material resources, as well as the importance of human dignity and compliance with their wishes. Therefore, after developing skills in this area, I was able to promote safe and specialized care and, by carrying out an integrative literature review on advance directives, I increased my knowledge and shared it with the teams involved. This report has also allowed me to consolidate and critically analyze, in more detail, all the challenges I faced and the opportunities for improvement. Through this document, I have described my journey of acquiring and developing skills in the area of people in critical situations and the successful achievement of the objectives I had initially set myself.
