Abstract

This report details the journey of several months for the acquisition of skills within the scope of the 16th Master's Course in Medical-Surgical Nursing at Instituto de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Porto It was developed considering the competencies of the specialist nurse, referring to the previously prepared internship project, where activities were listed for the acquisition of skills in the specialization area of Nursing for Individuals in Critical Situations. The internship took place in two intensive care units in the northern part of Portugal, one with a polyvalent typology and another with a monovalent typology, during the period from September 4th to December 16th, 2023. For each context, the main issues were identified, and strategies were developed for continuous improvement in the quality of care provided and the promotion of health, empowering patients and families/caregivers. This report highlights the learning of techniques for providing care to individuals in critical situations, strategies for infection prevention and control, and resistance to antimicrobials. Additionally, specific skills were acquired in the provision of care in emergency and exceptional situations.
