Enfermeiros emocionalmente inteligentes no cuidado da pessoa em situação crítica

Abstract

The specificity and complexity of care, as well as the constant innovation of procedures associated with scientific and technological advances, brings about a need for continuous training, acquisition of specific skills, and knowledge of the latest scientific evidence. The specialized training in Nursing presents itself as an added value in the acquisition of a set of knowledge, skills and specific abilities that allow for the intervention of Specialized Nursing, in response to the needs of the patient and family target of care, which allied to the professional experience and the training/academic pathway, promoted personal and professional development. The provision of nursing care to critically ill patients in emergency, intensive care and operating theatre is one of the most demanding and challenging realities due to the constant instability in these contexts. We still acknowledge that the focus tends to be kept on technical skills in detriment of emotional ones, although it is the latter that shows better results. By conducting a Scoping Review on the emotional intelligence of critical care nurses it was been proven that, emotional intelligence contributes to the success of people in their workplace when subjected to Stress and tension situations. It can be stated that emotional intelligence has a positive impact on critical care nurses, both at a personal and a professional level. This research was very enriching, having enabled the development of knowledge necessary for the provision of care. Together with the most recent scientific evidence, allows to increase safety and quality in the care provided to the person in critical condition and their family.
