Abstract

The research area on non-native speaker language teachers is a recent trend, which has received relatively little attention in the field of Portuguese foreign language research. In the context of Portuguese language teaching in Macau, after the Transition of Sovereignty of the territory to China in 1999, this language remains as an official language of the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR). For years there have been several public and private institutions offering Portuguese courses in Macau. However, the training of Portuguese teachers is still a topic that has not been much addressed in society.
This internship report intends to investigate the role of Chinese speaking teachers in the context of Portuguese teaching in Macao both through class observations in a secondary school and an analysis of in-depth interviews with both native and non-native speakers of Portuguese who work as teachers in Macao. The aim of this work is to investigate the role of non-native teachers and the use of language in the foreign Portuguese classroom.
The results of this report are divided into two perspectives: on the one hand, the analysis of advantages and disadvantages of being a non-native speaker teacher and on the other hand, the measures and principles of the use of the native language in the foreign language classroom. The report further provides some recommendations for the future of non-native speaker Portuguese teacher training in Macau.
