Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the students motivations in the area of Viseu, to opt for a VET course to proceed with their secondary education, namely to understand what leads them to opt for a VET course of a training school or of a high school, and if there are differences of educational achievement between students of these two types of school. This study includes a brief synthesis of the vocational training in Portugal, namely after being reintroduced in the post-25th April 1974 period, as well as the implications of the transnational regulation of this type of training. To carry out this study the option was the questionnaire, administered to students and directors of 4 schools with VET courses in the area of Viseu – two training schools and two high schools. After analyzing the results, it is verified that there are no significant differences between the training schools’ students and the high schools’ students regarding the way they perceive the schools and the courses they attend, as well as their educational achievement. It was verified that are differences between the educational achievement of students who had attended CEF courses and those who had attended the regular education before entering the vocational training, with advantage for students that come from regular education. As in other studies regarding the vocational training, this study shows that the sample’s students are mainly students marked by previous failures, and whose socioeconomic origins are lower than in the courses of regular education.
