Abstract

The present dissertation is about the life and work of Inácio de São Caetano (1718-1788), a Discalced Carmelite who played an important role in the historical course of Portugal in the 18th century, as well as within the Discalced Carmelite Order. This work presents the biographical path of this figure, from his birth in Chaves, through Braga and Lisbon, to the Portuguese Court, where he was the confessor to the Princess of Brazil and future Queen Maria. As part of the Enlightenment in Portugal, Inácio de São Caetano witnessed and was involved in several events that ended up marking the 18th century. Inácio de São Caetano, bishop of Penafiel and archbishop of Thessalonica, bequeathed a considerable corpus, analysed in this dissertation, reflecting his ideology and his life as a religious and political man, in a daily life lived between the cloister and the palace.
