Family and school are support and security pillars for the human being and the better the relationship between the two, the more positive and significant the results in the upbringing of children. Family and school life are simultaneous and complementary and it’s important that the school leaders, parents, teachers and children/students share their experiences. We submit a case study having selected for the investigation, under the school/family perspective, a public school that includes the specialized teaching of music in an integrated system. The present work aims to be a small contribution for the investigation of how a school that integrates the teaching of music promotes a greater parental involvement. The particular study that we present here is preceded by a contextualization based on the analysis of the legislation related to the family/school relation. The field work, being a case study, intends a better understanding of the mechanisms used by this school to bolster a greater participation of parents and relatives. Resorting to a documental analysis, interviews and direct observation we can perceive the development of that process, as well as its weaknesses and strengths. We realize that the relation between school and family is taken as positive and important by the elements involved and that, despite its late recognition in Portugal, this concept is in full recovery.
