Abstract

This report describes the process and the result of the course of Master in Nursing with Specialization in Community Health Nursing, in the area of Community Health and Public Health Nursing developed at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Institute of Health Sciences. Based on the development of specialized skills and academic skills of the Master in Nursing, the student course, in the theoretical component of the Master, the internship: Community Health- Surveillance and Clinical Decision and the Final Internship, which culminates in the presentation of this document, had as its central axis the Epidemiological Surveillance of Nursing Diagnoses (VEDE). This innovative process of framing epidemiology, allowed, in the context of a Public Health Unit in the northern region of Portugal, to develop an intervention in a Group of Health Centers (ACeS), seen as a community and as a unit of nursing care, through the management of a nursing project. The internship project was framed by the research project “MAIEC – Community project as a client of Nurses”, at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Health at Universidade Católica Portuguesa. This process allowed the student to develop the potential for the promotion of VEDE in the ACeS, whilst potentializing the development of the specific competencies of Community and Public Health Nursing: Community empowerment, program and projects management, health planning and epidemiological surveillance. Simultaneously, it allowed the development of competences for the academic degree of Master in Nursing.
