This study looks into identifying which are the elements that make up the ethos of a catholic school ( integral and transversal education, Catholicism and ecclesiastic elements, a Christian educational environment) and the importance of a leadership directive in it’s affirmation and development. It is a qualitative investigation based on a case study of two catholic schools located in the geographical area of Oporto city in Portugal. Through observation, predominantly non participative, interviews of the school directors, focus group interviews of both teachers and students, the data was analyzed in such a manner as to measure to what extent there is an identity and a specific difference within the Catholic school and how the diverse elements of such an identity affirm and develop when considering the different leaderships. A school leadership is portrayed and which ends up as being designated as Pastoral leadership in which the Catholic school directors should also know how to deal with the spiritual and pastoral aspects.
