Abstract

Social vulnerability is associated with personal, social, and environmental risk factors that amplify the possibility of someone or a family, manifesting mental problems. These risk factors can potentialize emotional and/or physic consequences. This study’s goal was to characterize psychosocially, pregnant woman and mothers, in the dimensions of psychological experience of pregnancy, social support, psychological well-being, self-concept and parental satisfactions and expectations, at the time of admission in an association which helps pregnant woman and mothers in a social vulnerability situation. The sample consisted in 22 woman, 13 pregnant and nine mothers, with ages between 19 and 40 years old. To collect and analyze the data, the following instruments were used: Sociodemographic Questionnaire; Attitudes Scale about Pregnancy and Maternity; Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support; Parental Satisfaction and Expectations Questionnaire; Brief Symptom Inventory; Self-Concept Clinical Inventory. The results indicated that the targeted population appears to have a lower social support from their partners during pregnancy and maternity, higher intensity on psychopathological symptoms, lower psychological maturity on self-concept and normal parental satisfaction and expectations. An implication for practice, could be groups for pregnant woman and mothers to share similar life experiences.
