Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

In carrying out this thesis, the main purpose is to address the issue of leadership
of a Music school by the Pedagogical Direction. It is intended to confirm if the
figure of the Pedagogical Director has, indeed, a central role in defining the
educational policy, how does it coexist with the administrative bodies of the
school, if it can promote the involvement of the other community members in
defining goals for the institution and if the gender of the Pedagogical Director has
implications in the way of leadership. One also tries to understand if there are
specific leadership styles in the performance of this task.
This work is divided into two parts which are to be complementary. In the first
part a framework is made of the teaching of Music in Portugal, in terms of
organizational structures and several concepts and types of leadership concepts,
based on a review of the available literature.
In the second part it is made the presentation of the object of study, research
questions and collected data. The methodology followed is that of a case study
implemented in two music specialized schools – one from the private and
cooperative vocational education system (that will be designated by Academia de
Música Vocacional) and one from the professional education system (which will
be identified as Escola Profissional de Música).
In conclusion, one demonstrates some of the conclusions obtained in the study
case, seeking to answer the research questions.
