Abstract

There has been increasing concern about the impact of potentially traumatic events due to the individual and societal problems they cause as well as associated mental disorders. Adverse childhood experiences, in particular, have been prioritized due to their prevalence and negative effects on children and young people's learning, school success, and overall development. The education system and school professionals play a crucial role in the development of children and young people, but there has been little focus on their ability to meet the needs of students and school staff, avoiding exacerbating trauma-related symptoms and re-traumatization. In response to the need for schools to take an informed and sensitive approach to trauma and the lack of research on this topic, this study adapted an instrument to evaluate and understand trauma-informed care based on the perception of a sample of professionals from Portuguese schools. The findings revealed a lack of preparation among school professionals and organizational readiness to recognize and effectively address issues related to traumatic events. Therefore, it is recommended that an enabling model be implemented, with a focus on training and supervision of these professionals whilst also involving school management and the broader school community.
