Abstract

This project final work encloses several critical points to the good action of the city, such as the accessibility for both the passer-by and the city dweller, the experiences and interactions in the urban public space, and how the architecture can be responsible for the quality of the public space, always taking into account the relationship of these issues with population aging. It is argued that the diversity in the cities is the most important factor to provide a good quality of life, safety, dynamism, and well-being, with civilized cities as the result. The main objective in the development and direction of this work is to find out how the public space can function both as a way of mobility and residence, together with the habitation quality of housing and experiences in the city. Some assumptions in constant change, such as the surrounding, the population, the current needs, and the local dynamics, have been taken into account in order to respond to a program to be implemented in a place that is seemingly static, which is the construction zone. The diversity, cohesion, habits, and above all, life will be implemented in this small portion of the city. The city is considered as a living organism in constant mutation, where all constituting parts are somehow interconnected and where the architecture has a key role in their association, leading to make them flexible in seeking answers to the needs inherent to the city. This work has a character strongly related to the public space, because it is believed that this is the main responsible for the quality of the city, considering that the city is constructed and developed from the public space. If the public space is well solved, giving accessibility, appropriate urban furniture, and comfortable spaces and materials, the city is thinking up being of all and for all, and the architectural quality of the buildings which make the city is reached.
