Abstract

This document, in the form of an internship report, appears within the scope of the Curricular Unit “Final Internship and Report”, of the 1st semester of the academic year 2024-2025, included in the 17th Master's Course in Nursing, with Specialization in Medical-Surgical Nursing in the area of Nursing for People in Critical Situations, of the School of Nursing (Porto), Catholic University of Portugal. Based on a descriptive and reflective methodology, it explores the process of development and acquisition of common and specific skills in assisting people in critical situations in the contexts of internships in the Multipurpose Emergency Service and Multipurpose Intensive Care Service. During the internships, the concern with safety and quality in nursing care was always present as the “main focus”, and therefore, the planning and implementation of strategies that aimed at better compliance with the rules with reference to the most current scientific evidence by nurses. Within the scope of continuous improvement of quality and safety, work carried out in different internship contexts stands out (Polyvalent Emergency Service and Polyvalent Intensive Care Service). In this path, based on the domains of common skills of the Specialist Nurse, in the domain of professional, ethical and legal practice, the ability to carry out practices in accordance with legal standards, ethical and deontological principles was improved, always ensuring respect for human rights. The readings carried out, activities and reflections developed, the care offered and the experiences acquired were fundamental for my professional and personal growth, stimulating critical and reflective thinking. This entire process had a significant impact on professional practice as it enabled the development of research-based knowledge and skills, contributing to problem-solving and improving quality management in healthcare.
