Introduction: Communication is a fundamental skill in healthcare, particularly in nursing, where there are constant interactions with clients and their families. Delivering bad news is a challenging task for nurses, requiring specific skills to minimize the negative impact on clients and their families. This dissertation investigates the strategies used by nurses in bad news communication, focusing on improving professional practice in hospital settings. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted, following the methodology proposed by JBI. The research covered articles published between 2019 and 2024, available in the Scielo, PubMed, and EBSCO databases. The selection of studies included rigorous criteria, such as relevance analysis, methodological quality, and fulltext accessibility. In total, four articles were included for analysis. Results: The analyzed studies highlighted the importance of structured protocols, such as SPIKES and BREAKS, in bad news communication. It was found that although these protocols are effective, the lack of specific training and emotional support for nurses constitutes significant barriers. Additionally, empathetic and client-centered communication is essential for quality practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration also contributes to comprehensive client support. Conclusions: The results suggest that improving nurses' training in bad news communication is essential to enhance clinical practice. Protocols like SPIKES and BREAKS provide useful guidance, but continuous education and adequate emotional support are also necessary. The research emphasizes the need for institutional strategies to facilitate this communication and promote a work environment that emotionally supports healthcare professionals.
