Abstract

The accomplishment of this Report is made within the scope of the Curricular Unit Final Stage and Report which is included in the Masters Course in Nursing in the Area of Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing, of the Portuguese Catholic University, having intending to describe, reflect and analyse the whole process of learning, developing and acquiring specialized skills. In order to acquire these same skills, I performed an internship in an Intensive Care Unit belonging to an institution located in the central region of Portugal. Communication is the central theme of this Report, specifically with the person with invasive mechanical ventilation, thus understanding, which strategies should be implemented in this care. Communication is considered the basis of nursing, being an integral part of the art of holistic care to the person and the center of a large part of health care (1). I participated in the 1st Seminar of the Master Course in Nursing through the realisation of a Poster: “Communication strategies with the person subjected to invasive mechanical ventilation: integrative literature review”. I developed other works, in particular a Training Session about “Communication strategies with the adult subject to invasive mechanical ventilation” as also a Rule of Procedure related to “Nursing care to the person with Malignant Hyperthermia”. In this last theme I also held a Training Session, creating a Basic Kit and a Algorithm, thus contributing to a better performance of the nursing team in the face of this complex situation. During this path, I performed a centralized care on the person and in his/her family, based on the most up-to-date evidence, since only this way I can mobilize my new skills to practice, which were developed through critical and reflective analysis, daily, implementing several strategies before the various activities experienced, based on the decision-making process.
