Abstract

This report, carried out within the framework of the Master’s Degree in Music Teaching at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Católica Porto, is divided into two parts. Part 1 details the course of the Master's student's Professional Practice in the area of Instrumental Practice - Cello and Ensemble Classes, held in the academic year 2022/2023, at the Conservatório do Vale do Sousa, in Lousada, with the scientific guidance of Professor Luísa Orvalho and the cooperative pedagogical guidance of Professor Raquel Ribeiro. In Part 2, the Pedagogical Intervention Project is presented under the theme “Training and teaching strategies to develop Sight Reading on the cello instrument – 1st Grade Students of the Basic Music Course”, which was implemented during Practice Professional of the master's student and, with which, it was intended to test a pedagogical-didactic material for training sight-reading on the cello , created by the master's student, and to evaluate the effectiveness of other pedagogical strategies (solfeggio, use of metronome, questioning, use of digital tools…). As participants, there were four students who attend the cello class in the 1st Grade, at the Conservatório do Vale do Sousa (CVS) and, also, with five CVS string teachers and seven professional string instrumentalists.Developing in students the habit of training this competence in the classroom, in the first year of studying the instrument, was the main purpose of this research. This study followed a naturalistic/qualitative investigation type, with a methodological approach to Action-Research, centered on a case study. The data collection and production techniques used were: a focus group, questionnaire surveys of participating teachers and students, direct and participant observation, field notes, audiovisual recordings and documentary research. A content analysis of all the qualitative records obtained and a statistical analysis of the closed responses of the surveys were carried out, followed by the interpretation of the data. The results obtained revealed that Sight Reading can be developed with weekly training and confirmed that the prepared material and the adapted training strategies promote the progressive acquisition of this competence.
