Nowadays, the world faces several challenges. The fight against climate change requires the rapid adoption of sustainable energy solutions, with digital development and transformation leading the change. Seaports, being pivotal points for global supply, are particularly affected by these vicissitudes. Consequently, to remain competitive and meet the ever-evolving needs of the industry, they need to continuously improve their strategies. In recent decades, we have seen the culmination of digital technologies such as the internet of things, big data, artificial intelligence and blockchain. These transform traditional processes, boosting the performance and global competitiveness of ports, offering multiple opportunities to increase their productivity. The metamorphosis from a traditional port to a smart port, aims to adopt modern information technologies capable of monitoring, automating, and analysing data in real time, allowing better planning and management within and between different ports. Thanks to the latest innovations, seaports are increasingly efficient, safe, and sustainable. However, the implementation of digitisation brings several challenges. Effective strategies in port management require a holistic approach over the entire logistics chain. This includes optimising operational processes, reducing response times, and ensuring effective communication between all parties. Thus, it is crucial to develop a comprehensive digital transformation strategy that aligns with the port's objectives, and addresses the current challenges imposed by the digital age. By developing a case study on the port of Rotterdam, it will be seen how digital innovations are shaping the modernisation of the port. The port has been at the forefront of digital transformation, having implemented a range of digital solutions to improve its operations and management. Thus, the analysis will focus on the main digital strategies implemented, and the opportunities and challenges these represent for the sector.
