Abstract

One of the most significant contributions from recent exegesis on the book of Acts of the Apostles is the interpretation of its narrative as a literary project aimed at outlining the construction of a Christian identity. The biblical author employs various literary strategies to serve this theological purpose. Recent studies, particularly by R. Tannehill and D. Marguerat, have explored these literary techniques to better understand Luke's work (the Gospel and Acts) as a dialogue that defines the essential characteristics of a Christian identity emerging at the time the book was written. Elements such as narrative chains, specific language choices, and the repetition of episodes illustrate the literary strategy intended to exemplify the urgent debate surrounding identity at the close of the 1st century. By reevaluating the book of Acts in light of these recent insights, it becomes evident that it serves as a testimony to a Christian identity that, at its foundation, is characterized by both unity and diversity, as well as continuity amidst the discontinuity of certain Jewish elements. The dimensions of universality and the integration of various traditions further enrich the biblical author's perspective on Christian identity.
