Abstract

This report arises within the scope of the Curricular Unit "Final Internship and Report" of the 15th Master's Degree in Nursing with Specialization in Medical Surgical Nursing in the area of the Person in Critical Situation at the Health Sciences Institute of the Portuguese Catholic University, Lisbon. With this report, we aim to reflect and explain the learning, development, and acquisition process of Master in Nursing and Nurse Specialist in Medical-Surgical Nursing (NSMSN) competencies resulting from clinical practice in a hospital setting. Throughout this report it is also presented a literature review conducted under the title“Non-pharmacological strategies in managing emotions of the person and family in critical situations”, where we tried to understand how the Specialist Nurse can intervene and facilitate transition processes experienced by the person and family in critical situations. The theme addressed is supported by the Afaf Meleis’ Middle-Range Theory where “transition is a central concept for Nursing” (Meleis, 2010, p. 66) because the Nurse focuses on the person who experiences a transition process related to health and must anticipate or complete it (Chick& Meleis, 1986). From another perspective, Benner’s Theory explains the importance of clinical practice in acquiring skills, describing how the approach to a problem is different for an expert nurse and a novice nurse (Benner, 2001).
