Abstract

This report aims to present the study and intervention of Conservation and Restoration, carried out during the curricular internship of the Master in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, with a specialization in Built Heritage, at School of Arts of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Polo Regional do Porto, of the gallery ceiling on the second floor of Palacete Silva Monteiro (Casa do Vinho Verde), dated between the late 19th and early 20th century and decorated with painting on stucco and gypsum frames, ornaments, and rosettes. The study carried out aims to characterize the decoration of the gallery's ceiling at an historical and artistic level, to determine the materials and techniques used in the work, the analysis of the state of conservation, and to identify previous interventions, based on the interpretation of the results of the analysis of the work materials. The investigation gathers the historical, artistic and aesthetic study of the surrounding context, as well as develops an analysis of the Bourgeois House, highlighting the patrimonial and historical value that the brasileiros torna-viagem introduced in the 19th century buildings of Porto, evident by the interior decoration and layout of the specialised spaces. Establishing a methodology, the conservation and restoration intervention was carried out, respecting the principles of the code of ethics of the conservator restorer. The intervention made it possible to carry out the restoration of one section, part of a set four sections that make up the gallery's ceiling, restoring the original aesthetic reading of the work.
