Abstract

The present study was aimed at determining the influence of a hyperhydration (three liters of water per day) in patients undergoing treatment with radioactive iodine (I-131) at doses of 100 mCi to 150 mCi, to allow a reduction in length of stay. Thus were obtained the values of speed of exposure to the thyroid, bladder, and the inferior member’s level during the time]} of hospitalization. Patients were divided randomly in two groups: one control group - Group 1 - and a group in which the patient drink at least three liters of water per day of hospitalization - Group 2. Was carried out, also, a study of the activity and rate of I-131 exposure over time, to allow calculate its half-life. The data collected in relation to patients, were treated and analyzed by SPSS statistical tool. During this analysis we obtained a significance level of 0,060 and 0,930 to 100 mCi and 150 mCi, respectively, using a confidence level of 10%. These values show that in terms of hyperhydration, the time of hospitalization may be reduced in patients undergoing therapy with 100 mCi. However, this analysis showed that for 150 mCi, water intake not affect the time of hospitalization. But performing a comparison of the two group’s average is possible to verify that the half-life of the Group 2 is less than Group 1, indicating that the reduction is possible, even significant, time of hospitalization.
