The practice of teaching music group plays an increasingly important role in the panorama of musical education in Portugal. Following these changes the methods Suzuki, Estrelita or El system gain increasing importance and are widely disseminated. These methods are used for violin melodies from foreign countries that do not promote Portuguese culture in the teaching of music and therefore requires a greater effort in learning unfamiliarity of children in relation to melodies. The lack of methods for violin Portuguese led to the subject of this study which aims to explore the possibility of introducing traditional melodies Portuguese in order to also promote our culture. Thus, this work explores the use of traditional Portuguese music in the context of group violin teaching method based on New Directions for Strings Book I and II Joanne Erwin, Kathleen Horvath, Robert and Brenda Mitchell McCashin. We studied the introduction of traditional melodies on violin lessons to students of 2nd Cycle - 5th grade (n = 3; 10-11 years old) and 6 years (n = 3, 11-12 years of age). The universe of traditional music served as the basis for checking idea advocated by several authors, that learning music is unparalleled in learning the language, so it is appropriate to use the musical context and social origins of students in the classes of instrument group . The application of traditional melodies Portuguese this pedagogical strategy facilitated the child's contact with their traditional roots, allowing recognize himself used in the musical context and learn from this, contents default to your level of education. It is the interaction of the family who contributed strongly to enhance the use of students and increase motivation in learning the instrument.
