This study aimed to understand the differentiating factors of a successful path / failure in institutional care process of children / youth at risk. This research method rests on a case study of the instrumental type of two young female, two technical reference for young people, families and teachers. For the collection of information was made analysis of the individual process instances, used semi-structured interviews; YSR - self-assessment questionnaire for young (Achenbach, Rescorla, Dias Ramalho, Lima, Machado & Gonçalves, 2014); linking questionnaire to the father and mother (Matos & Costa, 2001); Connection questionnaire to teachers and staff (Mota & Matos, 2005) and the Eco-Map (Melo Vieira, Simpionato, Alves & Nascimento, 2005). The interviews were analyzed resources to the method of semantic content analysis; the remaining instruments were analyzed according to the rules of each instrument. As for the results the young successful path denotes a moderate binding relationship with the mother and father figure and a very strong bond with the figures of the institution. The content analysis of the interviews suggest that her evidence adaptation and positive integration without major difficulty in the host perceive the institution as something positive opportunity in life and necessary. Regarding the young with failure path has emotional instability and a very strong link with the family of origin, the reference figure being the father. The relationship looks positive with the figures of the institution and school. Regarding content failure analysis of interviews it was difficult adaptation / integration and negative experience in the host where the host perceives as being away from home and refuses to experience in the context of host.
