Eating disorders (ED) are serious disorders and may continue throughout a significantly high number of individual’s life, the long-term course of an ED refers to the progression of its core features in terms of longevity and severity and can have an overwhelming impact on individuals and their families. ED often co-occurs with other mental disorders. Aims: Assess the clinical trajectory and recovery process of individuals diagnosed with an ED. Method: 54 feminine individuals who initiated treatment in an ED treatment unit, between 2001 and 2009, were evaluated. First with a clinical and social-demographic interview, then, with the Eating Disorders Examination - Questionnaire (EDE-Q; Fairburn & Beglin, 1994), the Symptom Checklist 90-R (SCL 90-R, Derogatis, 1977) and the Self-Injury Questionnaire (SIQ-TR, Claes & Vandereycken, 2007). Results: At admittance in the ED treatment unit Fifty-four subjects were evaluated; 34 (63%) had anorexia nervosa at income, 18 (33.3%) bulimia nervosa and 2 (3.7%) an Eating Disorder not Other Wise Specified. The Recovered and Not Recovered Groups were found based on the following criteria: 1) body mass index (≤17,5); 2) still in treatment; 3) clinical state at the moment of evaluation; 4) New treatment and 5) individuals perception of needing help for ED symptoms. Discussion: The number evaluated of not recovered individuals was higher then recovered ones, this indicates the presence of long-term course of ED in the first group. The rates of dropout from treatment at the ED unit treatment were significantly high on both groups. The social and family support and significant life events were associated to the process of recovery.
