Abstract

This study focuses on the creation and development of public health nursing education in the 1901 period to 1977, in Portugal, which led us to opt for a qualitative research approach that allowed us to better understand the course of nursing teaching public health. Considering the object of study, we used the historical method as a research methodology for promotion of answers to questions that conducted the study. We appealed primarily to primary sources where met the narration of events and testimonies from the genesis of public health nursing education up to the creation of their expertise in nursing. We used exclusively research and analysis of textual documents. Its location and accessibility were guided by the problem under study and the heuristic aspect. The documents were subject to internal and external criticism, analysis and understanding of texts was supported by hermeneutics. Along the timeline historical facts enabled us to identify and three significant periods to the history of public health nursing education and the way people thought, organized and developed this teaching framed by socio-economic and political-cultural context of each era. We conclude that the genesis, organization and specialization of public health nursing education occurred under the influence of historical social facts especially after the mid-twentieth century with the evolution of science, research and improvement of the health system. Since its inception, until the expertise, public health nursing education anchored on the assumptions of health education and nursing sustained in the legal and institutional framework of who patronized and organized teaching in various eras. Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of curriculum development in this area, provided the knowledge generated.
