Abstract

Currently, there is no agreement among the studies about the psychological consequences of induced abortion. On the one hand, the prevailing assumption that the decision to terminate a pregnancy can lead to the development of mental health problems at various levels (e.g. Cameron & Dean, 2010). On the other, tend to become increasingly common, evidence that only some women experience negative reactions after abortion or clinically significant psychological symptoms (e.g. Robinson, Stotland, Russian, Occhiogrosso & Lang, 2009). However, it was agreed that the psychological consequences of abortion complex, attention should be given to some aspects that underlie particular, sexuality, contraception and interpersonal relationships in order to characterize the diversity of experiences and meanings of this experience (e.g. Major, Appelbaum, Beckam, Dutton, Russo & West, 2008). It serves as a general objective for this study, the exploration of the experience of the abortion process and its impact on the lives of women who underwent this procedure two years ago. This exploration will focus on the level of mental health, family planning and contraception, social support and interpersonal relationships, intimate relationships, the experience of the process of abortion and positioning against the same. Since this is a qualitative study and a dimension encompassing semi-inductive, proceeded to the administration of in-depth interviews with six women, and later to an analysis by category system built. It was concluded that the ability to deal with abortion is positive, there is currently a visible significant impact on psychopathological diagnoses and intimate relationships and interpersonal. Subsequently, it was found that the abortion was determinant in attitudes regarding the use of contraception in order to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Finally, it was concluded that the passage of time after the abortion, had an impact on the ways we feel, behave and view life.
