Abstract

Introduction: Due to the success achieved by oral implants, they have become a common treatment for full and partial edentulous patients. Unfortunately its popularity may influence the Dentist’s decision, leading to extraction of periodontally or endodontically compromised teeth, when they can be preserved. Aim: This study aims to assess the clinical decision of dental professionals regarding the retention or extraction and treatment of teeth, when facing clinical scenarios of periodontally compromised teeth. The purpose is to reveal a trend in the current clinical decision, regarding implant therapy in patients with periodontal disease. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using the stratified technique was performed. The research covered Dentists (n=197) to whom it was asked to answer a questionnaire (online or in person). The results have been processed and analysed by descriptive statistical methods. Results: Regarding the decision to keep or extract periodontally compromised teeth, the vast majority of professionals with and without practice in implantology opts for preservation of dental pieces. Whereas tooth extraction, the option of rehabilitation with an implant is selected by most respondents. The decision to keep or extract appears to be influenced by practice in implantology. Moreover, the decision to place or not place an implant appears to be influenced by practice and training in implantology. The remaining parameters analyzed in this study, including gender, age, educational qualifications, the training institution, the number of years of clinical practice, the number of years of practice in implantology and the number of implants placed per month, seem to have no influence on the decision to retain or extract a tooth and place or not place an implant. Conclusion: Currently dentists have in mind the importance of maintaining dental mouth pieces on show and have knowledge about the various procedures. On the other hand, is notorious confidence that dentists deposit in implantology as a form of rehabilitation.
