This report arises in the scope of the Master’s Degree in Nursing and specialization in Medical-Surgical nursing by the Health and Science Institute of the Portuguese Catholic University. It aims to demonstrate the activities developed and to reflect the clinical placement’s path carried out in three contexts, with 180 hours of contact each, critically analyzing the experiences and the development of skills that characterize the specialized nursing care for people in critical situations and their families. The main focus was on patient and family comfort, therefore a systematic review was carried out with the theme: “Factors that influence patient comfort in the intensive care unit”. Identifying the ways and means of comforting allows nurses to contribute to the comfort process (Sousa, 2020). The human and professional qualities for the comforting relationship are dispositions, attitudes, which are assumed as patterns of structure for nurses, facilitating the comforting process. These qualities appear as elements of fundamental competence, to deal with manifestations of the patient’s adaptation process, to the context of health and illness, in order to help not only to relieve the various suffering and discomforts, but also to overcome in a positive way the situation, which is where the comforting effect is recognized (Sousa, 2020).
