Abstract

This report refers to the final training course event, developed according to the theme Design and Participatory Planning. The training course developed during the 2nd edition of the Iniciativa Terra Amada (ITA) - from September 2013 to August 2014. This Initiative was created in 2012 by the Integrated Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Portuguese Catholic University, coordinated by Professor Ana Pinho (PhD). This is a participatory and integrated project for the rehabilitation and fight against rural depopulation. In conjunction with sponsoring companies, the municipality and 60 volunteers - students and trainees, nationals and internationals, perform various constructions to aid the population and local development in remote and deprived villages in the district of Viseu. The participative and integrated nature of the population in connection to the university and other partners, as well as inter-generational participation, throughout the process, suggests on the one hand a critical analysis about the social role of the architect and on the other, the discussion on vernacular architecture and processes of self-construction of the human habitat. For this reason the theoretical context of my final exam includes the following themes: Participatory Planning, Architecture without Architect - Vernacular Architecture. My internship consisted of the rehabilitation of three barns converted into housing and studio. This process involved the following stages: (a) participatory diagnosis of the village; (b) definition of the rehabilitation’s program of the village; (c) project of architecture; (d) raising of construction materials and skilled labor; (e) finding volunteers for construction work; (f) direction of work; and (g) management strategy. This training course’s applied, participative and integrated dynamic, not only allowed the acquisition of a wide range of professional competencies of architecture, but also the perception of the complexity of building sites based on patronage and volunteering, as well as the difficulties faced by the increasingly aging population of Portuguese villages. The proximity with the developed enterprise during this training, exhibited evidence substantiating the theory in practice - mutual aid, use of local materials and applied teaching.
