Generative art is based on the definition of artistic creation systems endowed with some degree of autonomy, based on a set of predefined rules. Its application in the field of photography has been coined by Gottfried Jäger, german photographer and theoretical, with the term "generative photography” in 1968 to describe the photographic process not as a reproductive but as a productive system (Jäger, 2007). This concept is the basis of this thesis, which aims to analyze the use of generative systems in exploring new expressive possibilities in photography. The research seeks to understand how the use of generativity can shape different photogenic manifestations, exposing the process as influential part of the photographic series, either from a formal or from a conceptual point of view. Generative photography works are analyzed, to reveal the processes used and the mechanisms that cause this generativity. The artistic project Light Exposed, together with this dissertation, aims to achieve the purpose of understanding how the drawing of the light can be generated algorithmically, taking advantage of new digital technologies.
