Leadership positions pose great challenges to professionals, from the outset the need to make decisions about the most diverse situations. The present study, of a qualitative and exploratory nature, seeks to understand the relevance of gender issues in the exercise of leadership positions in prisons, and in the meanings constructed about the obstacles and experiences that arise in this leadership. After carrying out and analyzing five semi-structured interviews with professionals (men and women) who exercise leadership positions in a prison context, it was possible to highlight the key factors, meanings and obstacles existing in the exercise of these positions and throughout their career in the prison system. prison. The main conclusion of the study relates to the lack of differences between genders, regarding the entry or permanence of the participants in leadership positions in prisons. Instead, the participants highlight the need for having a profile or a set of characteristics to perform leadership in prison, that does not depend on being a man or a woman. Despite the stigma still associated with women who intend to assume leadership positions, according to the participants in our study, such a discrepancy does not occur in the current prison system.
