This dissertation deals with the theme of the gender mainstreaming strategy, in relation to the principle of gender equality. The first chapter, which corresponds to the introduction, presents equality as a fundamental pillar of human dignity and a structuring principle of the democratic rule of law, while portraying the respective legal framework. The second chapter addresses the issue of gender inequality, particularly with regard to work and employment. The third chapter focuses on the succession and evolution of political strategies for gender equality. The fourth chapter provides a contextualization of public policies for gender equality in Portugal, maxime, in the labour context. At last, the final considerations reflect on the positive perspectives of gender mainstreaming and its importance in removing barriers to gender equality, as a human rights issue.
