The following work aims to identify and characterize some of the factors that influence the intake on sustainable innovation as a contribution to sustainable development. The current strategy based on competitivity and sustainability is shared by nations, many national and international organizations and businesses. Competitivity should be guided by a sense of responsibility that, following sustainable development, should minimize the potential negative effects of our lives through products, services, processes and models of innovating development. Thus, innovation and sustainability, as fundamental factors to achieve a long-term competitive advantage, have been revealed as a central aspect for the more successful businesses. By resorting to literary review, we undertook the characterization and identification of some factors and determinants, which serve as boosters of sustainable innovation. The results of these reviews allowed the elaboration of a conceptual tool, designated as matrix for sustainable innovation. It was possible to conclude that sustainable innovation is triggered by internal and external drivers that include a set of factors and determinants. The study resulted on the identification and characterization of four factors and their determinants: civil society, government, competitiveness and business structure. After the identification and characterization we proceeded with an in-depth analysis of various scientific studies with the aim to validate the identified factors and determinants. The obtained results allowed concluding that every identified factor has a positive impact on sustainable innovation, regardless they also suggest that some determinants of those factors do not show a relevant influence.
